That must be before 1962 as I think the last trolley ran that year. I use the 41/641 for years!
Why did we think electric was not a good idea? Was it all part of the Lots Road problem?
The mythical 41, almost as elusive as the 171….
I used both for years. The 41 ([petrol of course) to get to Crouch End, Archway etc. The 171 however was very special - that delivered me and my mates to the doors of the OVAL cricket ground! And both of course stopped about 120 yards from my front door!
I can remember waiting for the mythical ‘every 12 minutes’ 171 on St Ann’s Road, to travel up to Essex Road…after almost an hour I saw it waiting to turn out of Black Boy Lane - stuck my hand out and it drove straight past me…..extremely annoyed was putting it very mildly…..
Ah yes, the infamous 'Request' stop... the real problem was that the driver's rules meant it was up to him meaning if he was full. But of course, if he was late or wanted easement or just a tea...!
I used to get the 171 to The Elephant and Castle, across Waterloo Bridge. I wasn’t aware it went to The Oval,
we were there two weeks ago on our way to Camberwell to visit friends. It was the first time ever that I crossed Vauxhall Bridge. The drive there was a nightmare.
Ah! The Elephant and Castle - I briefly had a girl friend who lived there. She was lovely but we both felt the journey was a bit of a drag!
I love this old photo. It conjures up treasured memories of cold, damp days spent growing up in Harringay during the 50s/60s. And I think it was the 641 trolley bus that I used to catch at bottom of Alison Road through to Southgate (or was it the 29 ?) to visit a favourite aunty. I travelled on my own from around 5/6 years old. Lovely memories.
And I too was there! I too used the 641 trolley and the 621. I think it was the 29 that went to Southgate en route to Enfield where I went to see my two aunts! And we took the same bus to Victoria station for holidays in Sussex. The 41 took me to school (Stationers) and also to Archway later. And the 171 went from the Salisbury Stop down St Anns to deliver us to the Oval Cricket Ground at Kennington - at age 10/11, in a small gang but no adults!
I used to have a boyfriend who lived in Bermondsey, which meant the mythical 171 from St Ann’s Road to the Elephant and Castle, then if the stars were aligned a number 1 would appear which would take me to just across the road from where he lived or else it was a 53 along the Old Kent Road then a long walk down Rotherhithe New Road.
