Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Remains of Crouch End Broadway Fire, August 1904

This devastating fire which started at around 5PM on Saturday 31st August is thought to have started as a result if rubbish being burned in the yard of number 41 Topsfield Parade, behind the shop. Apparently this was a common practice.

The fire spread to numbers 40 and 42. All three premises were gutted.

In addition to firemen being injured, the fire claimed two lives, After the blaze was extinguished, the bodies of Miss Nancy Newton and Miss Ida Wood were found on the first floor of number 41. Both were employees of Morley & Co, mantle makers in whose premises the fire started. The first floor was kept by the company for the use of employees.

Just four months later, ten doors to the east, the Crouch End Opera Houae was badly damaged by fire.

Having just come across a report of this fire, I've added some details above, below the photo.

One of those may have been the Naples restaurant in the 50s/60s?
