we had a school visit to the library from North Harringay and were given a talk by Enid Bllyton it was to have been by Lionel Gamblin back in late 40/s

Irene Rose Neil. How interesting your post has proved to be. Remembering Lionel Gamblin from my childhood, I Googled his name and found an interesting series of letters between him and Enid Blyton. He invited her to speak on a children's radio programme in 1949, unaware that she had been banned by the BBC! You can read the letters by clicking on:

One mark in the positives column for sites like HoL is that discussion can go off on the most unexpected and interesting of directions. Reading Geraldine's links, I saw that BBC4 showed a Helena Bonham Carter biopic of Blyton's life. It's not on iPlayer but you can rent it from Amazon (and I'm sure other suppliers).

Hi Hugh. Yes, I was conscious of going off at a tangent, but it was such a fascinating little snippet about the BBC banning Enid Blyton. Well worth a read, not just for the content but for the wonderful old typewriters they used way back when.
