The bikes were really cheap to hire, perhaps 1d or 2d, and it was a super-safe way to learn to ride, compared with hurling yourself down Seymour Road towards Green Lanes (though I did that too). On Liz's link to the Lordship Rec site, I came across this lovely news clip of the opening in 1938.

Hi all well I am glad to that Peter thanks for shairing that info about the Lordship rec.
Roger.
We used to go there to practice for our Cycling Proficiency Test. Very serious stuff back then. North Harringay School used to bring a similar set up to the playground occasionally for Road Safety. proper Pelican crossing and a real car. To demonstrate the instructor would lead a pupil across the crossing as the car approached holding the pupils hand, the car did not stop and the pupil was yanked back out of the way by the arm. Much to the astonishment of the onlookers judging by the gasps and screams from the audience. Where was Health & Safety then I ask?
