This was one of many toll gates around London. The nearest to us were on Green Lanes by Turnpike Lane and Manor House.

My great/great/grandfather Basil Dixon was a cattle dealer, initially at Smithfield which was then a livestock market and later at the new Metropolitan livestock market by Caledonian Road. By 1851, Basil had leased property at Colney Hatch ( a name later to become well-known for its mental institution) in connection with his cattle dealing. I pondered on how he might have got the cattle to and from market. The most obvious route would have been via Archway toll, though were alternatives, such as the old northern road down Muswell Hill, along through Crouch End and up & over along Hornsey Road. The family home, 1850s-1880s, was one of the cottages in this popular postcard view.
Well I don't fancy taking a herd of cattle down Muswell Hill, Ken!
Oh well, Richard, g/g/gpa will just have to pay up at the toll!
Always assuming he can keep up with them...
