Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Anderson Shelter Shed
This is me aged 4 in 1959 in the garden at 8 Warwick Gardens in Harringay. My Dad had made a shed out of the old Anderson air-raid shelter. It was in this shelter that my aunt, uncle and cousins sheltered on the night a bombing raid flew over Warwick Gardens and dropped land mines on three places in the attempt to take out the railway lines at the top of the road.
in that raid, numbers 1-11 Warwick Gardens were destroyed and 2-18 had their fronts blown off.This is why those houses have different fronts to the rest. Multiple houses were destroyed on Warwick Gardens into Roseberry Gardens and at the top end of Warwick Gardens at the end of Stanhope Gardens.
The Ever Ready laboratories were built directly opposite 2-18 with pre-fabs in the gap up to number 13.
My relatives were evacuated to Leicestershire for a year while the fronts were rebuilt, prefabs were built on the other damaged areas along Warwick Gardens, which were replaced with council flats in 1962.

I lived at the Warwick end of Roseberry Gardens three doors from the prefabs at that time; I would have been eight. I well remember all the Ever Ready vans around, along with the Wavy Line and Nabisco wagons outside the Café on my way to school at Chestnuts. As a coincidence, we now live in Leicestershire!

You haven't changed one bit Christine ! What a priceless photo and great little story. I used to pass those roads twice daily on my way to and from schools, Woodlands Park (Chestnuts) 1955-60 and later South Grove Secondary Modern 60-64. And for a time I used that café on corner, Doll's, when I worked on The Oceana Laundry vans. I was introduced to Doll's special.... 2 bread and dripping doorsteps (liberally salted) and huge mug of tea. The slices must have been near on an inch thick and cut to perfection ! Good days........
