Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Topsfield Hall and a very narrow Tottenham Lane

I find this picture interesting because it shows just how narrow Tottenham Lane used to be at its extreme Western and, as it entered the Broadway.

much of this picture will be familiar to those who have looked at old photos of the area. It shows Topsfield Hall: the sign post stands just about where the clocktower is today. however this one is different because the photographer has included more of the scene to the east of Topsfield Hall (on the right of the photo). Before looking at this I hadn't realised quite how narrow it was. The building on the east of Tottenham Lane (opposite the side of Topsfield hall) was a property owned by Henry Elder, the last owner of Topsfield. Beyond that travelling nothing was Holne/Colquon House. Sadly, I have yet to find any photo of old Tottenham Lane between Topsfield Hall and Manor Place (where Ferme Park Road now joins).

You can read more about eastern side of old central Crouch End in two articles I've previously published.
