Built in 1868, the Alexandra Park Tavern with its extensive gardens stood on the High Road in Wood Green just opposite the junction with Mayes Road (and now Alexandra Road).
By 1910 the gardens had been replaced with shops, and the ground floor of the pub extended. It was demolished with the construction of Shopping City in the mid-1970s.

Just a small correction- Alexandra Road, not Alexandra Park Road. The pub was first replaced by a supermarket-Key Market-then after a relatively short time that was demolished as part of Shopping City development.
Thanks Jeremy; a slip of the finger. I’ll correct the text. (‘Key Markets’, there’s a name that brings back memories).
My memory doesn't stretch back far enough to remember this pub but I do remember the key market now that Jeremyb has mentioned it. Anyone remember the David Greggs shop on the other side of the road just up a bit from Mayes road ?
Always called that pub 'The Alec'. Opposite was Mayes Rd. & Hornsey Pk, Rd. In Hornsey Pk. Rd there were open fronted shops, three I remember distinctly; one was the broken biscuit stall on the corner, the bicycle repair shop with all sorts of wheels for pushchairs and prams, and next door the boiled sweet shop and stall - wonderful smells! They had vats at the back in which sugary steamy vapours arose. This would have been through the 1950's
David Greggs - I remember them, my Grandfather made some of their shop signs in wrought iron. Farther down the high Street was The Wood Green Bazaar, a wonderful toy shop that sold Matchbox, Dinky, Corgi, Britain's, and Rovex (later Triang) train sets. I would spend ages gazing in the windows wishing and dreaming.
Would this be the same tavern that still exists on Mayes Road today, the Barrett sweet factory would not have been built when this photograph was taken.
