Talent competitions Saturday afternoons.  My sister won one of those.  We had a cat named Ritzy in honour of the cinema.

I recall a coffee bar in Westbury Road in the late 50s where we used to drink coffee in glass cups. It had a fairly exotic name I think. Anyone?

We are the girls and boys well known as the minors of the ABC,
And every Saturday all line up to see the films we like and
Shout aloud with glee
We like to laugh and have a sing song just a happy crowd are we
We're all pals together the minors of the ABC.

Song can be found on YouTube!

6 pence to get in; 6 pence for a FAB ice lolly; 6 pence for a small, cardboard, red box of Paynes Poppets: what a cheap Saturday morning's entertainment.
The Manager stood on the stage pointing to the words of the song and conducted us as we all joined in with the singing.
Most, if not all, films were black and white (think the cartoons were in colour) Tarzan, Old Mother Riley, Bugs Bunny, often a silent movie and generally a serial. Happy, well behaved, respectful children enjoying themselves - I must be getting old!

Flash Gordon! But in my day 6d would have been a lot for an ice lolly; it was I think 6d to get in. And that 'box" of Poppets was more likely a small one!

I kicked off at the Coliseum.  Entrance wasn't as much as 6d.  6d was a lot of money.  We loved Flash Gordon.  Buster Crabbe was Flash, The soundtrack music was Tsaikovsky's Overture to Romeo and Juliet.  I can still hum it.

Yes, Richard, 6d not 6 pence - how did I make that mistake!!
