Chestnuts Park was originally the grounds of the large house 'Chestnuts' which stood in the grounds close to Cornwall Road. After WW2, the house was used a the local maternity clinic. I'm not sure when exactly it was demolished. After I left the UK, so post 1983.
In the 50s & 60s, the park was more commonly known as Woodlands Park. The school also had that name. But the clinic was always referred to as Chestnuts clinic.
So Beans Green is now approx where the Beaconsfield pub stands.
Unless you look at the 17th cent map which shows it in two places. So, I imagine it was the strip of common land that roughly equates with the length of Harringay's stretch of Green Lanes today.
Fascinating, thanks. Doesn't it say "bridge" on the St Ann's map? I agree they do look like tunnels though.
Just found this, which shows that far from being parkland, the space was full of buildings in 1901 http://www.workhouses.org.uk/MAB-NEFever/
Yes, it says "Occupation Bridge". That refers to the rail line crossing the tunnel. The line over the tunnel at the end of Grafton Gardens that's still there is marked in exactly the same way. One of the residents of the ADC has told me that you can still see evidence of the tunnels today.
Fascinating! I might go investigating... I find it quite funny to think there are tunnels as I have so often fantasized about digging a tunnel so that I don't have to go all the way round the hospital.
