Notice the "standard" TBC Tottenham Borough Council Gas Lamp Standards which were green and yellow and could be found all over the borough. They were quite maintenance intensive in that right until their demise they only ever had "clockwork" timers. This meant that Gas Lamp Attendants had to cover the Borough once a week to wind the workings up.
They were replaced in 1964 - 1965 just before the demise of the old boroughs of Hornsey & Tottenham and the creation of the LB Haringey.

and Iceland supermarket thought they were the first with their new basket on wheels..
I love the picture, look how wide the street looks without cars! I bet the kids used to play out on the road back then, it must have been a school day.

It looks so peaceful and clean! I think the car in the background is mine. Liz is just coming to get a lift with her shopping.

I thought Jolly's was a butcher's shop, but I've seen it described elsewhere as a cooked meats shop, what we would now call a 'deli' I suppose. Yes, cars were few and far between and we did play in the street. I've been reminded that I played "Knock Down Ginger" as a youngster but I've denied that as I don't think I'd have been that naughty. Would I? I think all the Harringay roads are much more cheerful-looking now as all the houses then were pretty uniform and drab-looking.

Do you remember how the telegraph poles used to smell of creosote?

I have to say (with shame) that I also remember Gardens kids driving a woman crazy with Knock Down Ginger. She lived in the first house on Rosebery Gardens after the bombsite and I can remember her running out into the street screaming her head off until the police were called. I wasn't one of the kids doing it.. honest! Kids were just as horrible then as now..

My beloved Seymour Road 20 or so years before I was born. Fantastic.

If you'd walked up there and knocked on the door of 99 my Uncle Horace or Aunt Maud would have opened the door!
