Fascinating, it must have been the Wetherspoons chain that changed the name when it was a pub in the early 80's.

Was it called the Mortimer Arms before of after it was a car show room?

My mole says it was a car showroom pre 1985 then it was a Wetherspoons pub as The Mortimer Arms from '85 until the early nineties, then changed it's name to the OAE.

I don't know whether it was a pub prior to it being converted into a car showroom or whether the sign is mock Victorian.

Did they do mock Victorian in 1985?

I think they did Mock anything as long as they sold more beer

The sign just doesn't look like anything that would have been put up in the 1970s, but who knows.

Thanks Moonata, but how long had J.K Sportscars been there, I wonder. It would be interesting to find out what had been there before.

Are there no images in the historical images of Harringay to cross reference with?

My sis lived in Burgoyne road early 70s and she remembers it being a pub then which she used, as you would. Will check to see what name it had then and whether it was mock anything.

I believe the 'White Lion of Mortimer' on Stroud Green Road was converted also from a car showroom in the 80s by Wetherspoons so there seems to have been a theme at the time. That was also 'mock Victorian' though subsequently it has been changed to 'mock anonymous hotel bar'.
