Look at that beautiful tram and the stops in the road.
Now four lanes of traffic. One day I wonder if people will look back on our car worship as something very weird indeed.
What time did you get up to take this AJ? Must be Sunday morning!

I just checked the timestamp on the image, Liz - rather surprisingly a Saturday morning at 10:20 a few weeks ago. It would have been a different scene though at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon...

What I think is a shame is the missing ivy... well it wasn't actually ivy but a creeper that turned a bright red in autumn. It used to look fabulous and the building used to be "well known" for just that..
Even the Public Convienences is now a café. Don't people need to pee anymore?
Everything has been converted into profit & return.. otherwise nothing is provided.. What a sad world..
I can still remember the six year old boy who used to stand in front of that building with his Ian Allan Bus spotters book, ticking off the buses as they passed by..

Ah yes! I had forgotten about the 'ivy' - a sad loss.

After taking a longer look, I think the reason the building looks so ugly now, is because it has lost its proportions. Like many other buildings, it has been (in my opinion) ruined through renovation.
The replacement windows frames are not true to the originals and the building has lost its "depth" because the roof has been substantially lowered with the rooflights being removed. That with the loss of the "ivy", the horrid wooden fence at the front, a once quite grand building, now looks quite cheap and nasty. How can the owners get away with such vandalism? Because that is what it amounts to.

Virgina Creeper I think and it looked terrific. I too 'just' recall the trams - ruinous to bikes frankly, noisy and slow. But this is the poub we all want to remember... http://pubshistory.com/LondonPubs/StokeNewington/ManorHouse.shtml

If you look at Google and this picture you will see that the buildings that fill the right side of this picture are probably north-lit workshops which seem to still be there. My recollection from childhood (40s/50s) is the building in the picture I have found with a turning/parking area in front. Looks like it has gone completely?.  Whatever, the re-build reflected the gables of the work rooms not the much older pub. I think...
