Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just outside Harringay, but so close it doesn't matter. This cinema was built next to Turnpike Lane tube.

By the time I knew it in the late 80s it was the kind of cinema where your feet stuck to the floor.

It was demolished when the bus station was enlarged early this century.

Yes, that's it .. thank you. I came across Roy's CND photo later yesterday. The Umbrella is one landmark I would miss very much!

I know this is relating to an old post about Turnpike Lane "umbrella"( Flower July 17 2009) but could not resist making a comment now. Yes a great meeting place for Harringay folk. As someone has said I see "see ya under the umbrella". I distinctly remember meeting a girl in the Gaumont (spelling wrong?). When we came out I took her home up near Ally pally and arranged to meet her at the umbrella. Her name was Ethel, which she hated. It's highly unlikely that "Ethel" will read this, but I would like to use this forum to apologize to her for not turning up!. I did see her once more near the Gaumont cinema on the arm of Nobby Schooman, the local teddy boy leader. She was highly made up and not looking like the girl I made a date with. I wonder what made her turn into a teddy boys girlfriend and look like that?

Good tale that Roy.   Probably fortunate for you that Ethel didn't recognise you at the later Gaumont sighting otherwise you could've ended up as Nobby bait.
