So the 'art deco' front was post-1938 then? Or was this the preparation for it?

I'm guessing this was it. If we assume the interior picture was taken at the same time. it looks like they were just getting started.

The rebuilding was probably the raison d'etre for the photo.
These days, we always assume that Art Deco period was a twenties "thing". In fact, it carried on right through to the war in Britain and in France until about 1949.. In Britain in the middle to late thirties, there was also a "Streamlining" fad. Everything from trains, buses, cars, houses and as can be seen here, cinemas too, were "Modernised".
