New River

Have there ever been plans to open all or part of the New River for pedestrian access? It would be great if you could walk from the Ladder directly to Finsbury Park. No doubt problems getting under the rail bridge, probably too narrow at certain locations. However, I bet I could find plenty of tow paths in London that are open to the public that have similar constraints (including security issues).

in this thread Glyn, our local bobby wrote "It was public opposition a few years ago that stopped Thames Water opening up the section of the New River that runs through the 'Ladder'. They proposed to open the gates 24/7."
