It looks like there was an entrance to the tube from the island in the middle of the road. Or am I seeing things?

That's correct originally built for the trams to and from Alexandra Palace (37 & 39) as well as for the 51 Tram, Alexandra Park to Aldersgate via Harringay.
Unusually for London, the Ally Pally routes were single deck trams.
After the trams were withdrawn in February 1938, buses (only those via Westbury Avenue) continued to use the island stops for another thirty years. As can be seen by the bus stop arrangements, the 41 never used the loading islands.

So the traffic went on the outside and the busses/trams on the inside of those two now defunct traffic islands? I noticed that they were doing some work on the traffic island remaining today which would be the one closest to the common. The other one is now road and they have made the pavement on the northern side much wider. *sigh*

That's correct only buses/trams were allowed through the middle islands. The "Keep Left" sign can be seen in the photo.
The loading islands and the stairs down into the station were quite narrow, even so, that they were built at all, shows how foward thinking LT was at the time...

Used this many times and my father commuted to Whitehall daily from 1946 to 1956. All buses by this time and most of my experience. Last tram must have been about 1950-51?
