Thanks so much for the info. I was pretty sure it was probably the Oceana until John's comment and then the light went on - Oakwood laundry! I do believe that was it. Great.
If they had a receiving office on Grand Parade, it would have been Oceana. If it was the actual big old laundry building, it would have been Oakwood. If you look at my comment just before John's, you'll see I've linked to my history of Oakwood (formerly C. R. Laundry), written a couple of years ago just as the old building, opposite Beresford Road was demolished. You can see pictures of it and old adverts via my link on the previous page.
Oh thanks Hugh. That is particularly interesting to me. I will share the knowledge with my brothers.
It's the old Beresford Road building I remember going to as a little girl. Wow. Thanks so much, memories flooding back!
Yup, that's Oakwood - written up at harringayonline.com/forum/topics/potted-history-of-the-hawes-and-cu...
Used to walk past the Oceana Laundry on my way to South Grove School in the late 50s
Colin....your surname sounds familiar ? I went to South Grove but couple of years behind you, '60 - '64.
So possibly we overlapped somewhere along the way.
And I worked at the Oceana Laundry for a while 65ish.
My brother and I used to take our bagwash there on our way to Woodlands park school. Also my Dad`s white collars came back starched
