Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Grand Parade, Early 20th Century
From Umfreville Road looking north. (To see on map, click Show on Map, below right)
The first road on the right is Stanhope Gardens. On the south corner, where Barclays now is, stood the National and Provincial Bank. Notice on the opposite corner, the distinctive tower on the top of the building. This has now been lost and replaced with a more run-of-the-mill roof line.

What is the column next to the traction pole on the corner of Stanhope for? Is it some sort of tram stop? Also of note is that the street lighting is still gas, although the traction poles would have been ideal as lampstandards too. And the shop in the front of the shot is a Garage?? Could you perhaps give some more close up views of these points (either here or per message)..

Sorry Steve I don't have any more info and sadly at the moment this is the highest definition shot I have for this photo. I have some quite decent resolution shots for other Green Lanes pics, but not this one. I am trying to get it, but it's in a private collection.

Placing this around 1914, The 'Garage' was likely the name of the shop run by a motor/electrical engineer called Adalbert Schweitzer - I wonder if he was given trouble for his name when war broke out like the German (or German sounding) shop owners of Tottenham High Road.
Doing a little idle research shows that a number of businesses were owned by people with German (sounding) names on Grand Parade in 1914.

The top German name must be the Mrs Hitler that lived on Warham Road during the thirties. Michael Anderson mentioned this in a previous post.
