This a Gresley A4 engine , known to "Harringay Trainspotters" as "Streaks". The most famous of which was No. 4468 (later 60022) "Mallard". Running down into Kings Cross with expresses from Edinburgh and Newcastle, they would always sound out their "chimes" when passing Hornsey station. At that moment, a cry of "It's a Streak" would go up on the train spotters platform in Finsbury Park, as we eagerly awaited getting its number as it passed by. The A4s ran alongside the suburban Gresley N2 engines which were known as "Coffee Pots", which worked the surburban trains into Kings Cross and Moorgate via Farringdon.
Harringay station was re-named Harringay West in 1951.

A couple of "Streaks" have survived.
60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" is preserved, as seen here, on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Hate to admit we were anoraks in our early years .Happy times always at the hogs back at Harringay West .We always used to take the local service into King's Cross and up through the coal bunkers round the back of KX and into the engine shed, always on the lookout for the shed foreman .We got chased out of the engine shed on many occasions Oh Happy Days .

Hi Stephen where did you live ?. My brothers and I often stood on the bridge whihc was in Finsbury park. They used to write numbers down but I was just excited at seeing and smelling the smoke coming from the trains.
