I just happened across the following couple of paragraphs rererring to this event:
Roy Rogers (born Leonard Slye in Cincinnati and raised in Portsmouth and Lucasville, Ohio), and his golden palomino, Trigger, went to the London crusade in 1954, and attracted 40,000 kids and many of their parents to a children's meeting at a dog track next to Harringay Arena.
When Roy backed Trigger out of his trailer at the hotel, the horse trotted into the lobby carrying Roy's suitcase in his mouth, slobbered on the front desk, clomped up the steps to their room, came out on a balcony and whinnied boastfully to crowds of cheering kids in the streets.
Triggered [!] by a query justnow regarding this event: my brother met Roy Rogers on a cruise. Actually the son rather than the gent himself and he told my brother that Leonard Slye originally aimed to be a dentist and was encouraged in this by his childhood dentist. Circumstances led him elsewhere than dentistry and when the chance came to break into movies, he needed a more striking name eventhan the one he had adopted for early musical endeavours and chose that of Roy Rogers the dentist.
