Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Burgoyne Road showing the Iron Church / Parish Room c1905

Before St. Paul's Church opened on Wightman Road in October 1891, the church ran its services from the "Iron Church" between 56 and 58 Burgoyne Road. Opened on December 23rd, 1883, the building originally seated 200 people. It was later enlarged for 325.

After the permanent church was opened, the Burgoyne Road building became the "St Paul's Parish Room" and was used as community space. In 1925 the old building was demolished and a new parish hall was opened. By the 1950s a new hall had been built behind the church on Cavendish Road and the old site was in use as a clinic in which use it continued until earlier this century. At some point in the later decades of the last century, number 58 Burgoyne Road was acquired and demolished to permit the building of an enlarged clinic. Latterly in use as an Adolescent Mental Health Services site, within the last five years the new building was acquired by Haringey Council for use as women’s refuge.

In 1975 the hall in Cavendish Road was replaced by a new church hall/community centre.
