A little way down on the left, pass the Clock Tower, I had a Saturday job working for Cyril Ashwell who owned a second hand bike shop on the right hand side of the road during 1962-3, repairing bicycles, and selling bicycle parts, etc.
I remember for lunch we would put a tin of Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pie on top of a paraffin heater with the tin resting on two dumbell bicycle spanners. Invariably the base of the pie became charred. Also we would use an old OXO tin to heat pies in the same way.
Thank you for posting this, Hugh. Very revealing. As already commented: old cars! More like 1960 than 1970. It is a real "blast from the past" - sobering for me, as I was approaching 30, and my first "proper" job in the centre of London at the time.
