He added that seeing them at this time of year fits with their typical behaviour. That's as may be but it's the first time I recall seeing them on the lake. And very pleasing they were too.

I see where you friend is coming from, in March unpaired ducks cast their net wider in search of females and this is when a lot of more unusual ducks can be seen in park ponds and the like.
Check out my graph of Wigeon sightings over at Woodberry last year (below) - they are seen in the late autumn which coincides with the time there is a lot of weed on the water surface. I haven't seen a wigeon in Haringey or Hackney yet this year (plenty down nearer the Thames estuary)
