Yes I would say early 50s, the loco on the freight is an Ivatt 0-6-0 (Pre Gresley) and they didn't last that long into the nationalisation era.

This train is on the up coal road just north of Harringay West. The locomotive seems to be ex GNR J6 0-6-0 64253 which was built in 1919 and lasted until 31st May 1962 when it was withdrawn from New England shed (Peterborough). Although colour photography had been around for most of the century it didn't become all that popular until nearer the 60's due to the high cost compared to monochrome, leading me to think that it was taken in the later 50's possibly even later.

The coloration suggests that this is a b/w photo that has been tinted.

I don't think so. Simon. The original was a mush of faded colour. So I retoned it. Even the retoned version doesn't look colourised to me.
