Where to grow Black Irises

Hi all

I have just been given some black iris rhizomes.

Does anyone have these growing in their garden? Do they do ok in Harringay's clay soil (I have added some organic matter and sand to my beds but it still has quite a bit of clay in it)? And would I be better to plant them in my garden at the front of the house which is south facing  or in my back, north facing garden?

Alternatively I was wondering whether to but the rhizomes in different locations and just see which ones do the best.

Any tips would be fabulous

Hi Sally

From my v limited experience with irises a key issue is whether they want a lot of water or not, as lots of them need boggy conditions or even ponds. Did yours comewith any instructions? The link below suggests black irises do need moist conditions:

And sun rather than a lot of shade.

If they do need water, I've been growing some in a pot with limited drainage and they seem to do ok.

Thanks Alison and sorry for the late reply! I think I will try some in a pot. Are yours in a south facing pot for lots of sun? Many thanks again
