Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

At the moment I am running the garden hose from either the bathroom sink or kitchen sink tap as do not have an outside tap at the flat.

Kitchen is at the back of the flat and kitchen sink by the back door to the garden.

Where can I find out what would it cost to install an outside water tap, any ideas please?

Thanks a lot

I've done this myself - it was easy. I 'tapped' into the cold water pipe under the sink with this type of joint - you tighten it and it makes a hole itself.  Designed for plumbing in washing machines in the kitchen. You might already have one for a washing machine\dryer etc so even easier if you already has a place to attach to.

You might already have one for a washing machine\dryer etc so even easier if you already has a place to attach to as you can get 'T' joints in that case.

£4 from Screwfix.

Then I fitted an external tap and wrapped everything in foam to protect against freezing weather.

Here's a kit for £15 that includes the outside tap.

The thing that can go wrong is obviously if it leaks and you can't stop the leak. So maybe only fit it yourself if you can turn the water off beforehand and live with no water until a plumber arrives.

Fixing your leak ought to be way cheaper than fitting the whole thing so you still win.

Hope that helps.

I know what you mean about how forbidding it is, you're probably right to steer clear. I have used mybuilder.com before now - if you say you want the tap kit I linked to fitted and include photos of the likely route, you might get someone you can use in future for other stuff.

Because they all have demonstrable reputations, if you choose a popular one, I reckon you'll be safe and you could therefore ask for a handyman, not a plumber.

Let us know how you get on, Anka, if by sharing you might be able to help others.

Hi Anka,
I did exactly this last summer and received three quotes from different plumbers. Two local plumbers quoted close to £300(!) saying it was complicated because they had to run copper pipe from our first floor flat, but the third said it was a simple job, just that materials would comprise the main cost. It was done in about half an hour and cost us £120 with four meters of copper pipe, insulation, and stop valves. I'd recommend shopping around until you find a quote close to £100. No more watering cans up and down the stairs-yay! Good luck!
I had this done - I seem to remember it cost £150 but that was a few years ago now. It was definitely money well spent. It is quite a simple job but like all plumbing jobs, I take the view that a bodge job is a false economy because water can cause so much damage so I would rather pay a professional.
François mobile number is 07867 540 418 an excellent tradesman who installed an outside tap on our property but I have no idea on how much it cost to install the tap.
Hi Anka, I had an outside tap fitted about to my ground floor flat which is in a converted Victorian house about 5 years ago.
It cost £110.
I don't have the plumber's details anymore.
