Hi Alison, 

Yes the vandals would have a problem stealing these! Have people had experince of pots getting stolen from front gardens do you know?

There was a rash of it being reported a few years back, but I can't see anything recently.

Thanks both. I wasn't worried about these being nicked from gardens, had been mulling over whether you could use them in a more public space (eg at passage junctions where there are no planters).

You could throw tyres over resident parking notice poles, i think i tyre would be big enough to get past the sign, then once on the ground fill it up with soil which would make a quite solid and reasonably vandal proof little garden.

I inherited some tyre planters with our house. The tyres have somehow been turned inside out and give a much bigger planting area. Not sure how this has been done but they are really useful. As the tyres are filled with compost they can be pretty heavy, so if someone wanted to take them I think it wold hurt!

Spotted an N10 variant on this today - galvanised bins on bricks. Not a great photo but it looked fantastic, adjacent to a really lovely front garden. Bins cost something though (more than old tyres at least), so more to lose if someone decides to move them on.

kwik fit and other tyre change outfits have to pay to have the old tyres taken away so are happy to donate as many tyres as you wish. They're great for growing potatoes. when the stalks grow up simply put another tyre on top and fill with (eco friendly) compost. My Tomatoes reached 12 feet two years ago grown in discarded tyres on my patio. as they're rubber they are good for water/heat retention.

Yep, the tyre shop on the corner of Sydney and Wightman Rd has lots of old tyres they're happy to give away.

This web page shows how to carve up and turn inside out tyres to make planters which could look good over a bollard.

But the turning inside out sounds quite hard, a big pile of brightly painted tyres would be easier and could look ok at a passage entrances:

 OOH WHAT LOVELY COLOUR TYRES, REMEMBER A HOUSE BACK IN THE 50s IN GOSPATRICK ROAD N,17,  HAVING A WHITE PAINTED TYRE FULL OF PLANTS IN THE FRONT GARDEN.
