Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I spend a fair amount of time digging out this fast growing invasive perennial weed, which can spread quickly & crowd out less vigorous plants but at this time of year I love to see it's beautiful white umbellifer flowers, which I will remove before they set seed.

If you love umbellifer flowers but want something a little better behaved I can recommend the following:

  • Sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata)
  • Black Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing')
  • Baltic Cow Parsley (Cenolophium denudatum)
  • Bronze Fennel (foeniculum vulgar 'Purpureum)
  • White Lace flower (Orlaya grandiflora)
  • Bishop's Flower (Ammi majus)
  • Pink Hairy Chervil (Chaerophyllum hirsutum)
  • Ornamental Wild Carrot (Daucu carota 'Dara')
  • Dill (Anthem graveolens)
  • & if you have the space - Angelica or it's purple cousin Purple Angelica (gigas)

If you have room for a few of these, with their graceful, elegant flowerheads & delicate foliage, they will encourage aphid-feeding hoverflies & bees into your garden.

Thanks for this, Sally. I like the look of the Pink Hairy Chervil and Baltic Cow Parsley. I might give them a go (if I can squeeze them in!)

Slightly off-topic, my tutor on my RHS horticulture course told us that Nigella (love-in-a-mist) seeds are toxic to ground elder! Am collecting seed and will spread it on my neighbour's garden-length border infested with ground elder to see if it works...
