Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few weeks ago, at the seed swap event, a few of us were talking about the Open Gardens events which take place during spring and summer. And we got to talking about whether there would be any interest in having an informal version of our own - a day where a small number of us could have a nose around each others' gardens.

It would be aimed at people who are interested in finding out what can be done with a similar space/soil/aspect, or who are just curious about different gardens and what people have managed to do. The gardens wouldn't be remotely 'perfect' (certainly not mine) but I'd personally be really interested in seeing what other people have managed to do, talking about what does or doesn't work for them, and getting (or even giving) advice.

What do others think? I guess it would work by people expressing interest here and then us agreeing a date some time in June/July. Depending on how many people are up for it we could have specific time slots so that everyone who participates gets the chance to look at other people's gardens ..

What do you think - any takers?! I can offer up my recently unlawned garden to anyone who is interested ...

Hiya Alison, sorry about my silence, I have been away and accessing this thread by mobile phone. 1st July is better for me. 24th June might also work but is less certain. Please include me when working out your sequence of visits.

Hello everyone

We've now got a date - Sunday July 1st. More details in this post here! Really sorry if anyone can't make this.

Great!  How are we going about this, Alison?  Presumably, we've not visiting all gardens on the same day?  That would be too much for me with a back disability.  I'm mobile, don't use a wheelchair, but back easily becomes strained (musculo-skeletal).

Hi Jeanette. I think for this first go we should have it as a one day thing as otherwise its just too hard to organise. The idea is that we have time slots for each garden so people know when they need to be in if their garden is part of it and can choose which other gardens to visit. More details here, along with info about the various gardens already signed up (hope you're still keen too!).

Hiya Alison, assuming you know where each garden is situated, may I suggest that you propose a sequence of time slots that minimises the distance to be covered between them?  If it is easier for you or for Jeanette (or others) I can just as easily receive visitors on the following Sunday (8th July) afternoon either instead or as well as on 1st.  That would give more time which might be good for some people as my garden is as much a playground as it is a source of gardening ideas.

Just to remind people that we're going ahead with this on July 1st (Sunday) and the full post about it is here. If you've got any questions or comments please put them on that post so that they're all in one place - and do let me know if you'd like to include your own garden. I will come up with a route that takes account of where each garden is.

Hiya

We are up for it again, I'm trying to get a few other local Tottenham neighbors involved this year.

:)

Yes please Alison - ours is 95% finished - just need to fit our Burmese lights ; ) ... but I guess no garden is ever finished! So please do include ours.

Matt

I'm up for it again too but this post is 2 years old!

A lovely idea! I previously lived in Sheffield and enjoyed opening my (very imperfect, urban) garden in an Open Gardens event on our street. We raised a few quid for a local charity by selling tea and cakes. I've now lived in Harringay for nearly a year, and am slowly turning the patch of scorched earth the house came with into somewhere greener and nicer to be!

Anyway, I realise this is a 2012 thread but if there were any interest in reviving it and pencilling in something for next spring/summer, I'd be keen. :)

Cheers,

Lucy

Hello everyone who has posted on this recently, and sorry for being so silent - it has been a tricky and busy few months. I think it is a bit late in the year to organise this for 2014, but would love to do it again next year - ideally for late spring.

Happy to organise again but would love to think up some new ideas - I will start a new thread nearer the time (or just post here if you've any thoughts in the meantime). Hope your gardens are enjoying the sun...
