Hi. Anyone got any thoughts on both where to get any onion and garlic seeds or what ever is used for onions (not sure if they are grown from seed actually- it has been a long time). Also where to get them from, web sites or anywhere local you would reccommend?
Thanks

I've always found Sunshine garden centre over towards Bounds Green to be the best place locally.
You can grow Onions and garlic from seed but you get to eat them quicker if you grow them from whats called 'sets'. Sets are just miniature onion and garlic bulbs which means they get off to a fast start. Its getting a bit late for garlic if you want to harvest this year but onion sets can be planted now and into April.
Thanks for the heads up Sam, se I really need to get the garlic in now then if I am to avoid missing the boat? I thought the frost might be a bit of a hinderance...
Growing spring onions from seed is very easy in my garden. I have not yet succeeded in growing large round onions either from seed or from sets. Maybe it's the soil or perhaps there's too much shade. I have left in the ground some sets I planted last year to see whether they will prosper this season.
In 2009 I planted a mixed collection of onion and garlic sets as a trial. Almost all of them failed but after the following season I found that I had some unusual garlic plants. These looked like small white onions about 50mm across except that the bulb was entirely under ground and, under its outer skin, was a single clove. They tasted like garlic but not strongly.
