Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

HOL Flower Show - May (aka. what's good in your garden *now*)

As this is the season of flower shows, it seems only appropriate for Harringay Online to make its own contribution. I'm thinking of something online, free and local rather than some other flower shows.... also it being a repository of flowers/shrubs/trees that people can grow locally without necessarily having a greenhouse or a degree in horticulture.

These are the guidelines I'm thinking of:
- Flowers/shrubs/trees grown in Harringay. All my stuff is fairly hardy, so doesn't require constant attention or worrying about frost but don't let that limit contributions from experts.
- No judges, silver gilt awards etc. If you like it that's good enough.

I am by no means an expert so I am looking for ideas as much as anyone else!

Here are three from my garden this morning to start things off:

Pyracantha - an absolute mass of flowers at the moment so popular with the bees. Also very robust - foxes might destroy some plants but the spines on this chap are quite a deterrent. Arguably its best display comes later in the year though.

Nigella (Love-in-a-mist) - just noticed the first one yesterday opening. An interesting/unusual flower and very easy to grow - buy one packet and it will self-seed all over the place in subsequent years.

Allium. I think this one is 'gigantea' (it is quite big...). These chaps have been out a week or two now - fairly long-lasting and extremely easy to grow.

I'm intending to start a thread with something for each month of the year, though Dec/Jan could be challenging...

I'm not quite sure this will work (can't see how to add the photos without just uploading them) but here are mine ...

The allium is a new one for me this year - the ones behind are similar to Alistair's but the one in front is a different sort where each stalk has its own little starburst at the top.

The dahlia I'm including just because it is so damn early for a dahlia!! My mother lives in Scotland and hers haven't even appeared above ground yet. Rubbish photo though, sorry.

And the third one shows some gorgeous foxgloves just about to break into bloom.

That dahlia is amazing. "The Flower Expert" book says "From the end of July to the first frosts Dahlias provide large splashes of colour..." so mid-May is a little earlier than that! What's the secret?

Climate change and London's heat island affect
My dahlias are just one inch above the ground.
I start them off inside and I started them too early (March) - one was shoulder high before it made it outside, and our bedroom was like a jungle. Drove John insane. But they seem to have coped - unless it starts snowing or sommat.
Have now worked out what the little flower button on my camera does (thanks Alistair). Here is a better one of the dahlia.

And here is my favourite flower of all - Euphorbia. It's passed its best now - was fantastic a month ago.

I'm a Euphorbia fan also - I was holding one in reserve for 'May' to make up numbers if necessary but now I don't need to! Agreed, they are probably at their best in 'April' though. Do you know what type it is? It looks a bit 'wulfenii'-like apart from the coloured centre to the flowers.
Dahlia looks great. One thing I noticed is that 'ning' appears to reduce the photo size when you upload via 'Add an image' but it doesn't actually reduce the file size so these photos (and the ones I did for TK) take a while to appear unless you are on an ultra fast broadband connection. Reducing the image size before uploading with photo software will make it quicker to upload also.
wo that dahlia pic is something! gORGEOUS!
Oh I see. I'm a novice gardener, I left mine in the ground all winter and am now surprised that only one has reappeared! Did you dig them up and keep them inside in the winter?
A little bit out of season perhaps, but how about Sean Wallis' new photo on Harringayonline's Flickr group of blossom in the snow in Finsbury park. Great snap.
I want a pyracanthea and an allium now....,.......all i got is daffs and primroses....mind you my tiny crab apple tree is in leaf and about to burst into blossom...my lilac and hydrangeas and white roses too... but I still want a pyrancatha ... had one before a long time ago in a former garden... so good in spring...
Just comparing what I've got this year with last year. No way will I have dahlia flowers before the end of the month! Only new thing I can post here is this rather pretty aquilegia. They self-seed all over the place and (I think) never breed quite true, so you never know what you are going to get. This one is certainly a new one on me.
