Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The lake at Tottenhem Cemetery (in the garden of peace) has been dregged.

Now, that is welcoming news to all, apart from....they are not removing the waste from the dregging, cos they cant afford it.

So instead, they have decided to just pile it up on one side of the lake and let it sit.  Then they will grass over the area.
End result - half a lake.

Now this lake has been part of the landscape for over 400 years.  How dare they change it, just to save a few pound.

Tottenham Cemetery, has, like most things, been privatised.

I dont want our lake changed.  I need help in any way possible, in ways of fighting against this silly decision.  Im not sure how to approach this, so any help of advice, would be very welcome.

This might sound like a very naive comment (I guess it is because I don't know much about these things), but where does garden waste go when the council collects it if you've been doing work?

Why can't they collect it?

Has anyone asked them?

How much waste is there?

A x

(Sorry, I've just asked me questions rather than answering any of yours!!)

Well, yes, I guess it can be classed as green waste, even if its black.    But I think there is more mud and rubbish, than organic waste.

without the rubbish being sorted, I guess they wouldnt take it, or they would charge alot for it.

Well, if you know the lake....the waste is enough, to of filled half of it up....so its alot.....But dregging a lake, aint a little task.....you expect alot to remove

Garden waste, and the kitchen waste from the small bins, is taken to the London Waste eco-park in Edmonton, and composted.

Sometimes it's then given back to us, as at the great compost giveaway yesterday in Ally Pally.

That lake-bottom sludge sounds as if it would be super-fertile stuff if only it wasnt polluted with beer cans etc. as it's rotted leaves + maybe deposited silt from the Moselle?  But how weird that they have dredged the lake without following through in the cleaning up.  Is it at all hazardous (syringes)?, in which case it needs to be removed not turfed over.

Well this is what happens when everything is privatised.  Money and profit always comes before wotever your wanting to do.

And the green waste your talking about, aint just green waste.  Roadside sweepings are also included.
Ive seen farmers fields littered with non-green waste rubbish.....syringes, plastics, computer parts, batteries......Farmers are hopping mad about it.  As it kinda ruins their fields....there is too much rubbish to pick it up by hand.

A number of people are trying to find out what's going on - including members of the Tottenham Civic Society, and some local activists. Responding to emails, both Cllr Lorna Reith and I have put in a formal "Member Enquiry" and have alerted Nilgun Canver the "cabinet" councillor involved.

So far we've got some partial answers which go some way to explaining what's happening. I'm happy to copy the email thread to anyone who's worried. It's rather lengthy and growing!

But please can genuine concern and a passion for the borough's green and open spaces not prevent us from continuing to ask questions and establishing the facts; rather than jumping to conclusions.

I urge you all to take a visit to the lake (now known as the swamp) of Tottenham Cemetery and see for yourselfs, the levels of stupidity, that have be used in all aspects of this so called, clear up, of the lake.

They have removed ZERO waste from the area (Im not just talking about the silt.  Im talking about, car tyres, sign posts, tin cans, mini-scooters, etc).

Please, take pictures, post them, spread them.  Make this known!

There is no Dignity in this work. (which funny enough, is the name of the company that own it).

Just a quick photo update, for those that aint seen it.

Its still a shithole.
conservation area my arse

This is the result of privatisation.
