Yasar Halim (not so) fresh food
On Friday we noticed that a one pint bottle of whole milk we'd bought in YH the previous evening was obviously fermenting and about to pop. Looking more closely we saw its "use by" was 06 Sept, so it had been out of date when we bought it.
I took it back and agreed with a staff member I could change it for a new one, but on looking at the stock I found it was all out of date.
I drew this to the attention of the staff member and for good measure explained that the stock should be cleared as it was illegal to sell food beyond the use by date. She silently gave me my money back. No apology, no "thanks for the help" or even a smile. (Not that the last is untypical )
Today, incredibly, the out of date milk is still there. You can choose between 3rd, 4th, 6th or 7th September.
Could the milk be harmful rather than just unpleasant? Should I call Trading Standards? I have pictures.

Funny you should say this, the last few times I went in to get some pastries, etc I asked their staff if it was fresh - they insisted "yes, its fresh". So I asked them if it was made today, they wouldn't answer but carried on saying it was fresh. When I asked them when it was made, they reluctantly mumbled that it was not made that day, but "...it still fresh". When I advised them therefore that it was not fresh, they kept on insisting it was (?!?)
The last couple of years I found the staff completely aloof and rude, and I rarely shop there now.
You have got to report the milk issue to the Food Hygiene team on LBH's website - they should not be selling out of date milk. In fact, the last time I went in there for something, their fridge wasn't working but they were still selling the stuff that was stacked in there.

I went in a couple of times because they had the good whole French chickens. Stopped when checking the expiry of the last one I bought because they'd stuck their own (later) one over the original expiry. Have also previously bought tinned goods and found they were at least a year out of date once I got them home (but Yasar isn't the only one where that's happened).

From my own observation, many small supermarkets and takeaways make their cash 'n carry trips using unrefrigerated vans for dairy and meat products, which (to my knowledge) is illegal and will often decrease the shelf-life. Since separate experiences with fizzy yoghourt and 'off' meat some years back, I only buy meat and dairy from bona-fide supermarkets, I also get cashback and tokens.

I've found yoghurt there that was over a week out of date. When I told them they told me to take another kind instead and put the first one back on the shelf. I told the man it was against the law but he just waved me away and said "no problem darling".
I've always had my doubts about the place since seeing cats running about the shop at night when coming back from The Salisbury in the early hours. This was a couple of years ago and my weekend habits have changed somewhat so I don't know if this is still the case. As much as I love cats they shouldn't be running about a food establishment! I'm guessing they were using them as pest control.
It's a shame because it is a good shop in terms of the product range. I just get the impression the staff are quite miserable and hygiene isn't their top priority.
Also worth bearing in mind they supply a lot of the Grim Lanes restaurants so even if you don't shop there you are still probably eating their food if you dine out locally.

I saw a rat in there last year. Haven't been since. I used to shop there sometimes esp in bakery but no more. I informed the council

Well I'm quite sure yassa halim will not lose any sleep about this bad publicity, hey ho you could say the same thing about any of the local green grocers and including Iceland. In fact I found iceland the worst and the hardest to get refunds
As for yassam halim, in the last 22y I have lived here it consistently gives best value for money, having intermittently used other places for convenience
Their low prices and prob low wages,and so frequent change in staff don't include customer service. I personally find them as friendly as anywhere, and they are always happy to change anything that is not right. Sorry who says they have to be happy about it
But if we didn't have something to moan about, heaven for bid, that would be a disaster

Its not a question of 'something to moan about' its about supplying safe food in a hygienic rodent free enviroment. I am sorry I have never seen a rat running about a shop in broad daylight. There were many aspects of Yassa Halim I liked, but having seen the rat I decided never to go there again. Given other peoples experiences outlined here with out of date food including chicken the situation is clearly a job for HC. If anyone from HC reads this even if yu dont work in food safety I would expect you to report it. I reported the rat to HC and heard nothing about it.
