Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just under a month ago, three restaurant workers from Green Lanes in Harringay wrestled a knife-wielding robber to the ground as he tried to raid a Green Lanes jewellery store.

This week Emanuel Namerud Fekadu, 19 years of Gloucester Road, N17 appeared at Wood Green Crown Court and was sentenced to 20 months in a youth offending institute (to serve a minimum 10 months, less time spent on remand)  for attempted robbery.

The court heard that Fekadu was an accomplished student and had been due to enrol at university.

On sentencing, Honour Judge R F Morrison said that he couldn't avoid the "frightening consequences to staff" of Fekadu's criminal behaviour, which left a female staff member trembling in fear.

Judge Morrison praised the manager of the shop for his "frighteningly brave" actions that led to the apprehension of the defendant and awarded him a £500 sheriff award.

Investigating officer DC Rob McGee said: "I would like to thank the members of public for their heroic efforts in detaining this offender who sought to cause fear by using a hammer to violently smash up the display cabinets leaving a female member of staff terrified by the incident. Fekadu's arrest and subsequent conviction should send a message to others who turn to this type of crime as a way of getting cash that we will track you down and bring you to justice. We continue to seek the outstanding suspects who's attempt to rob the venue was thwarted by the brave actions of the manager and we are keen to hear from anyone with information. We are determined to track down offenders and put them before the courts where they will face a prison sentence.

"I would like to remind jewellers of the importance of controlling who comes into their shop by making use of their buzzer and double door air lock entry systems."

Police were called to reports of a robbery at a jewellery shop in Green Lanes, N4, at about 14.10 hours on Sunday 19 September.

Fekadu was among four suspects who entered the shop. Fekadu pulled out a hammer and started to smash the glass counters containing the jewellery.

The manager of the shop confronted the suspects and managed to detain Fekadu with the assistance of passers-by until police arrived.

The other three suspects fled empty handed.

Fekadu was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted robbery.

Police are seeking the outstanding suspects, all of whom are described as being of black appearance, wearing hooded tops. Anyone with information is asked to call Finchley Flying Squad on 020 8358 1751 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
