Being a non-techie, when I first started HoL I was like my dear befuddled old grandfather trying nobly to get to grips with cable TV (and hoping all the time that no one had a clue that if he'd been behind the wheel of a car, a crash would be imminent).
Just as Gramps had no idea what the difference between was between the 6th and 7th row of buttons, so I didn't really have any idea about the difference between the blog area of HoL and the forum pages. So I kinda used a bit of both so's neither felt left out. (I'm considerate that way). I think I've got the difference licked now and I thought it might be worth struggling to communicate what it might be so more of us might feel emboldened to create our own bits of blog real estate on HoL.
So here goes.
On Harringay Online, forum posts are for:
- snippets of news or information that aren't written by you to express a viewpoint.
- issues where you're keen to start a debate
On Harringay Online, blog posts are:
- for creating a more personal space for your narrative where you can add opinion pieces.
- able to take on the character that you choose to give them since they're a collection of your stuff. It might be because of what topic or topics you choose to blog about, your personal writing style, etc. If you start a HoLblog you're likely to garner fans (as well as unfans). Some people will visit the site just to read you.
- open to more control by the author. As a blog author you can choose to pre-moderate comments and/or delete comments you don't want appearing on your patch. (And that means you can erase the grumpies at the touch of a button! Aah, if only life were so simple.)
