Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Wooden stairs (inside a flat) - who "does" them? Whose trade deals with this sort of thing?

I realise this may sound like an incredibly dumb question, but who fixes/repairs creaky wooden stairs? Do I phone a general builder, a carpenter, a joiner.... or someone else?

I genuinely have no idea whose trade this falls under.

I've got very creaky stairs between floors and when we pulled the carpet up towards the end of last year, we discovered very old wooden (when I say "very", I mean 40 year old) completely untreated wooden stairs, which had been painted in some places, and some of which have cracks in. We sanded all the paint off, but now apart from the fact the wood needs treating, I don't know who to call to stop them squeaking and creaking.

Advice and suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Fiona

It's the gaps that are causing the problem.  If you search for eg Fix Creaking Stairs, you'll get loads of links inc to how-to videos.  eg  http://www.familyhandyman.com/floor/repair/how-to-repair-squeaky-st...

It's a carpenter job.

I love that you think 40 is old.

Haha, I realised as I typed it that for the UK, 40 is a mere spring chicken in housing age.

Thanks for the tip, Parnish!
