Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As Harringay prepares for it's first Sustainability Meeting, a simple cooking product that is helping South Africa fight climate change and poverty at the same time is on its way to the UK.

Wonderbag is an insulated  draw-string pouch which cuts down on fuel usage. Food that has been kick-started on the stove is put into the bag where it can finish cooking without the use of extra energy.

You bring your food to the boil and put it in the Wonderbag and it continues cooking for up to 12 hours depending on what it is.

Sarah Collins, founder of Natural Balance who make the product, explains:

‘It saves people a huge amount of time. If you want to cook a casserole that takes four hours you no longer need to have your stove on for that long. You just need it on for 15 minutes and then you put it in the bag. The bag saves half a tonne of carbon emissions per year.

‘It’s the oldest technology in the world, people used to cook in the ground for hundreds of years. It was called a hay box in World War II and it’s the same technology.’

We had a "haybox" in our student digs, made out of poystyrene with a space for the saucepan in the middle. Great for beans and things that took a long time to cook.
