Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

No not the council, but a note of thanks and acknowledgement must go to all those residents who came out yesterday afternoon onto wightman road to help grit the road and paths, shovel snow and give cars a helping push up the hill.

Trying to get home in the car before the worst of the snow began - we failed miserably - and almost had a re-run of the wightman piste earlier in the year, which was a mixture of wacky races and a winter olympics slalom event

But out came the rescue teams with buckets, spades and community spirit and got those of us stupid enough to be out in cars on our way.

Respect to you all!

Yes that was very brave pushing those cars up the hill. Sorry I didn't get any pictures of that but here's one of the people at the bottom who were having to put carpets and boards out.

People helping drivers trapped in the snow

BTW, I notice the pavements aren't clear. A small point - we have a bye-law which requires house owners to clear the pavement in front of 'their properties' and claims can be made by the council against these people for failing to do so.

I seem to remember that in the 60s & 70s people in London also did this.

Depends on snow/ice condition. Just been out for a walk. Worst areas were those that had been cleared. Very slippery. It's all in the timing me thinks as to when clearing should happen (ie. temperatures, more snow forecast, ice).

I second that Matt. For now the snow is a much better walking surface than mostly cleared snow.

Perhaps for shorter snow periods - but when you are talking about weeks, months that is certainly not the case.

Think perhaps of older people with shopping trolleys or children's pushchairs /wheelchairs.  Or do you both expect them to sit at home for weeks on end?

Yes agree with longer periods snow/ice best off being cleared off pavements. Hence the huge community effort with the Passage last February.

Stephen, it would have been worth you flying back for, shovel and all. :)

And where was I supposed to land? Blackpool?

Shovel? Don't have one.. Our Apartment House Community pays someone to do it!

I had two colleagues trapped in Frankfurt since Thursday night make it back to London last night. Train to Brussels and then to London.

I got away from Frankfurt on Wednesday OK - also by train:

He did say " for now "

Yes he did. Although most people need to get out before Christmas.. Our cold weather is certainly here to stay until at least after the New Year.. and yours?

Weather forecast says that temperatures are going to remain this way and there'll be more snow from Wednesday.
