Why is Umfreville rd closed?

Coming home this evening I found my road closed at the bottom for no apparent reason. An area has been coned off with "Road closed" signs in both directions, but no visible roadworks, damage or anything else that would cause an emergency closure on a Saturday night. The shopkeepers at the corner know nothing about it either.

Sound of drilling going on outside, so definitely road works.

They have started taking out the 'bus lane.
