Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I recently noted that people queue for buses in Crouch End but not Green Lanes and wondered why.

On my most recent excursion I noticed how markedly cleaner Crouch End is on a Saturday morning compared to Green Lanes and again wondered why?

Both are very busy on a Saturday morning (Crouch End arguably more so). Both have lots of cafes and restaurants. Both have bus stops.

But Green Lanes is littered with rubbish.

Why is it so?

Speaking of anarchists, I saw this on Harringay High Street today. Anarchists getting organised? Would that not disqualify them from the gang? But, I suppose logic is not something one expects of such people. Any anarchists in Crouch End?

ORGANISE?!

Anarchists would seem to lack the iron discipline of Communists. The offer of organising is a peculiar invitation from this tiny group.

In order to illustrate how much of politics is about personal ambition (AKA, journeys), here's a couple of vignettes from Haringey Council:

A former active Communist Party member (Cllr Lorna Reith) would later become a Labour Group enforcer (Whip) for the über New Labour Administration led by Cllr Clare Kober.

The current New Labour leader (Cllr Peray Ahmet) has previously and publicly defended Grime music using the same language as the Anarchist Communist Group, working-class struggle.

I think it was Leader Kober who first facilitated Grime in Finsbury Park; subsequent Leader Ahmet continues the New Labour policy.

If you're interested in Anarchism Oli, you might enjoy exploring the range of different approaches. I haven't been back to Freedom Press bookshop for many years. But if you don't know it it's in Angel Alley Whitechapel. There's a website.

Their webpage says it's still run by volunteers. I found them very welcoming and helpful if I had questions.

It's near the Whitechapel Art Gallery. When I and friends went there it had a little cafe.

Oli, you seemed to disapprove of Highgate Karl. So let me mention one alternative writer, Colin Ward,  who was known as the gentle anarchist and seemed to stand for fairness, justice, community, allotments, and people's ability to work together to make change happen.

You may well know his writing and work far better than me. If not, please look him up on Wikipedia.

As I said, it's fun!

This morning I came across an essay by a U.S. academic Garett Jones.  I guessed that many other people might know a lot about his work and ideas. This particular writing is on Migration.
While it seems to focus on the United States, there are discussion points
easily applied to Britain as well, and across Europe and elsewhere.

Here's the link:

He's shown as having published three recent books.

If you allow people taking wages from the state to vote, they will vote for more wages from the state.

Thanks for the Jones article - it actually reinforces my point that this is fundamentally different from historical conquest events. Jones shows cultural values persist across generations and change receiving countries permanently. That's exactly why the scale matters.
