Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

for the last two months, my wife and I have been trying to contact the Selkie Swim School, because we would like our four-year-old to have swimming lessons there.

We have left numerous messages on their answer phone and via their email address, but have not received even an acknowledgement of our interest.

Just before the end of their summer term, I thought I would try to bypass this communications impasse, so went along to one of their lessons. I spoke to Lucinda there who took down my details and said that Karen would ring back. Needless to say, she hasn't.

We have been trying on 07757 727782 and selkieswim@yahoo.com. Does anybody have any alternative means of communicating with them? Or is it that they have gone out of business? (That's the only logical reason I can think of for their utter lack of communication.)

It seems that the person who runs the swimming school is on HoL.

Also, you may be interested in Tessa's post last month when she published the results of the consultation on the pool's future.

thanks, Hugh. my wife has just sent a message to Karen, so we will see what happens
Try Chestnuts School. Our 4yo starts lessons there in September. I've had good comms with both the school reception and the instructor himself re lessons.
Thanks, Bshade. do you have contact details for the Chestnuts lessons?

Regretfully I have to say that I too have had this problem with Selkie and it has not yet been resolved. I had a question at the end of Summer term; I emailed it - no response. I send the email by (snail) post to the address on their documents and asked for a response and I have still not yet had a reply over a month later.

At the swimming lessons themselves, the person who runs the swimming school is not on site for much of the time - just the teachers. Therefore when she is on site, there is a queue of parents waiting to talk about their child's swimming lessons and progress and you have to wait 20 minutes just to get a quick word.

Look forward to having my questions answered!

maybe their phone dropped in the pool

Sounds mad but try texting the mobile number you have (correct the last time I got in touch). That usually works for me. Sorry you've been having trouble, it is a good place to learn swimming (but obviously not so good on communication skills!).
I've never had problems getting in touch with Karen on that number. They lessons are pretty full though. Usually once the schools are back they find out if folk have moved, changes times etc then places get freed up and offered. Like Alison says try texting Karen.

Thanks, Alison and Karin - will try that today. Or at least my wife will, as I don't have a mobile

The pool is tiny, it might be okay for beginners or water gymnastics, but it would be very hard to to build up good swimming technique and stamina.  It is no good going on holiday with your child only being able to swim 8 meters or whatever without having something to hold on too.  We have used Park Road since my son started lessons.  Some teachers have been better than others but my son is now a club swimmer and does junior life guard training.

Hi Phil,

Sorry to hear you have had problems contacting us. As we have got more popular, keeping on top of all the admin has become a mamouth task but I do try my best.

The beginning and end of each term is hectic with rebookings, course certificates and various queries, and I simply did not get a minute to acknowledge any new contacts at that point. Sorry and as we did not run any summer intensive courses, I spent most of the holiday away. I hope this explains the lack of communication.

What we do do really well is teach swimming with patient and dedicated Instructors- I hope this too will be your experience of us.  We really try hard to be as family friendly and flexible as we can.

Our September course has just started and I have a much clearer idea of what vacancies we have. So if you are still interested, please get in touch. Please do not let my poor communication put you off.

Once upon a time....I did get to personally call and talk to all our parents in person and I enjoyed getting to know our families. Sadly as we have grown it seems the quickest way to communicate is via text or email.

I am usually at the pool at the beginning and end of each term and I really look forward to seeing everyone and rewarding their progress - maybe a little too much !!

We always want to do our best, so I will take the comments here onboard and see how we can improve this area.

Thank you  x

Our contact details are 07757 727 782 and email  selkieswim@yahoo.com.

Thanks, Karen. You and my wife are now in contact, so all is well that ends well. Might I suggest, though, that if you cannot reply to emails immediately, you set up some sort of out-of-office message so that people are aware that their messages aren't just disappearing into the ether? Thanks a lot, Phil
