Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Why are the police and the council failing to do something about the anti-social behaviour on Duckett's Common?

I'd really like to know why the blatant drinking and drug dealing on Duckett's Common appears to be unchallenged by enforcement authorities.

As someone who passes by  Duckett's Common often, and witnesses the  congregation of  groups of young men, who are clearly dealing (and if they aren't dealing then they are smoking weed) I can't believe this remains unchallenged.

As it gets darker and large groups gather, it also becomes intimidating. I have female friends who get cat-called and followed. A young friend was offered drugs as he cut through on the way to Green Lanes.

I know the Common has a brilliant and active Friends Group and I have been to some of their meetings but I fail to see why they can't place more pressure on the police to do something.

The councillors - such as David Schmitz - who are generally very good seem to lack the will or the teeth to tackle this problem.

Surely, it is possible to enforce a zero tolerance policy towards this behaviour before it spirals out of control?

Everything you have mentioned here, especially what happens with regard to women, happens all the way down Green Lanes.

The police do know about this but apparently there's a little confusion as to whether the local or Transport police should be dealing with this (ie. because it's around the tube station area). Suggest someone takes this to the next LCSP meeting.

LCSP?

Ladder Community Safety Partnership - a community group (including local beat officer as a member). Liz (HOL admin) or Karen Alexander (local councillor) should be able to tell you when the next mtg is. LCSP deal with local crime issues, flytipping, planning apps which cause concern etc.

I get cat-called about half a dozen times as I walk from the Sainsburys or Mattison Rd bus stop to my home every night. Frequently witness dealing in the open in doorways too. Especially annoying are the groups of blokes hogging the pavement and if you say excuse me they blow kisses or say "pussypussy". This is at about 6-6.30pm. I tend to just ignore it or tell them to eff off but I can see how some find it intimidating. I was propositioned by a teenage guy outside Iceland the other week too. Who wanted to come and give me a "sexy massage".

it happens to me too, on St Ann's Road and Seven Sisters Road, especially when walking past the Romanian/Bulgarian "construction workers" outside Wickes.

but Lauren, with respect, you are a cat.

I appreciate that it may be very inconvenient but the passage is free from these kind of problems. Just dogsh*t to look out for.

I do sometimes go up Mattison Rd then continue my journey along the passage to Pemberton, where I live, but that doesn't solve the problem. I'm not really intimidated by these w*nkers, but I can see why some people are. I also have stop off at the various shops for my dinner between Mattison & Pemberton, so avoiding Green Lanes isn't possible & WHY SHOULD I?

Yes exactly, why should you. I'm just saying that if it bothers people then the passage is probably much safer than they think.

Hi, like every other resident I know I'm completely baffled why the Police allow this group of men to openly deal drugs in broad daylight in a public park where children are playing, it's just bizarre. I've just sent yet another e mail to Pauline Sydell and Liam Farge at the Metropolitan Police who have always been very polite and seem to understand that this isn't acceptable but nothing ever changes so I can only presume that their superiors couldn't care less about people openly dealing drugs in the area as it's been going on for years. Supposedly there's a 'Dispersal Order' in place and I was told that this would stop them congregating there but they're still there every single day, bold as brass.

The always helpful Nilgun Canver has just suggested I email Richard Watson, the relevant Cabinet Member, and Stephen McDonnell, the relevant officer, as Ducketts Common is in their ward, which I've just done - maybe if enough of us keep on asking the Police and Councillors to do something about it they'll finally make an effort ??

Hi Pete, I'll do the same.

I'm really keen to keep the pressure up about this and so some co-ordinated action may do that. I'm going to email and talk to David Schmitz and Karen Alexander.

And I'm finding out about the LCSP meeting.

I'll keep you updated as to my progress.

Best
