Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi.

We are considering a move to Edmonton with small children and wanted to hear about it from the people who live there. Which bits are nice to live in, any areas to avoid? Thanks in advance.

I haven't lived in Edmonton, but I do have a property there and spent a good deal of time finding out what it was like before buying.

It seems to me that the best bits are to the west of the town centre. The walk down Church Street from Edmonton Green Station is really pleasant. Whilst the heart was ripped out of the town centre you can still see and feel the more timeless side of Edmonton walking this way.

There's also lots of green spaces. All that grey space to the north of Church Street Rec, both sides of Salmon's Brook is also park or allotments.

Just to the east of Church Street Rec is Latimer School, one of the top 10 state schools in the country. (Believe it or not, right in Edmonton).

Transport links are good now. Plenty of buses, close to A10 and A406 and a rail line newly part of London Overground.

The biggest downside for me would be the town centre. If you walk around you don't see so many places you want to go and sit to have a coffee or have a meal. But it will only be a matter of time before that changes. In the meantime you have Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green a short cycle or drive away. Enfield Town isn't much further.

Crime was my biggest concern. So I spoke to shopkeepers and just people I stopped in the street. Most say that although there have been some headlines, they generally feel as safe there as they do anywhere else.

If you move there, you may feel like a bit of a "pioneer", but you won't be the only one. Right now, it's still a bargain and if you can live with being away from Zone 2/3 and from being a short schlep from Crouch End, for me it's a great option. (I'd have to say that I feel rather differently about much of the area to the East of Fore Street/Hertford Road, but it may be that I just don't know them).

There's an Edmonton Green website, but it doesn't have much care lavished on it.

I think you're on the money with this, except for a minor spelling mistake of Latymer school, which is a grammar school which our son goes to (although most of the other kids seem to come from Finchley). Obviously Edmonton/Enfield has fallen a long way from being a world leader in manufacturing/technology as it was 40/50 years ago, to 'Shank Town', as part of Edmonton has more recently become known - there are some interesting pieces about this by Aditya Chakrabotty of the Guardian and elsewhere who grew up in the area. But the way things are going I guess anywhere vaguely within reach of central London is likely to spring back into fashion before long, unless a certain referendum goes the wrong way

I always find it enlightening to look at the website "ii Live Here" to get an alternative view, Edmonton and the Borough of Enfield get an interesting write up, as do Manor House , Palmers Green and Finsbury Park
Interesting? Really? I find it utterly depressing. It's a website that's been established as revenue generator by encouraging only bad reviews. I'm completely uninterested and unenliglhtened by what its contributors have to say.

That was tongue in cheek, but Im still of the opinion it's an alternative view to the happy clappy local forums.  Would love someone to do a write up on Turnpike Lane, Tottenham would be to easy

Good to hear it!

(Sometimes I wish HoL was happier-clappier!)

I worked in Edmonton for years, the borough is generally a crime-ridden s___hole especially the area bordering Tottenham. The better parts tend to be around Pymmes Park, Church Street and roads that border Palmers Green.

We moved to Upper Edmonton(just north of white hart lane/A10) 18 months ago. Much lower house prices! There is much to like, esp if you tour round the suburban back streets, many of which are traffic free 1930s housing. We live in a small close with settled familes and a world away from transient Turnpike Lane. Edmonton Green is hardly beautiful, but cheap parking and a plethora of shops is not to be sneezed at. Easy access to the North Circular and easy route to Epping Forest also.

Philip, did you have a relative that worked for the GPO (telephones) years ago?.

I used to work for Cable and Wireless(Post Office) in the 70's.....that was on the public telex counter at Electra House, near Temple. Don't know if that means anything to you....unusual surname though....

I used to see an old boy who had worked for the GPO/BT for years (as did I) and he lived in Cambridge Gardens and I'm sure his name was Alfie Fox/Foxe. I used to see him either walking out of the turning or in the Goose. Haven't seen him for a few years so I assume he's moved away or passed away.

You don't need to go as far west as the A10 to find nice spots.
