Sliced Bread on Radio 4 is covering the demise of Homebase https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002dzyj

RETAIL bricks & mortar under pressure:

Poundland was recently sold for one pound.

Coincidentally—as these outlets are both in the Arena Retail Park—according to part of a ChatGPT response, Homebase in 2018 changed hands for the same sum:

Homebase, the UK DIY and hardware chain, went into administration in 2018 primarily due to a failed acquisition and restructuring strategy. Here are the key reasons for its downfall:

Exit & Sale to Hilco Capital (2018)

  • In a fire sale, Wesfarmers sold Homebase to Hilco Capital for just £1 in 2018, after suffering massive losses.

  • Hilco immediately implemented a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) to close around 42 stores and cut rent costs on others.

Soon after it closed I wrote to the CEO of the range asking about this site.  Got a standard response that said very little only referring me to their on line lists of new openings. Looking at the distribution of their open sites they don’t seem to have many inner city venues.
