Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Once again today I had a totally frustrating experience trying to actually buy something in this large, untidy and sprawling place. No-on around on the shop floor to answer questions and help you find things. Then at the checkout there was a queue of about fifteen people. There were two staff, who spent five minutes huddled over a malfunctioning lottery machine. Then the first person they served had a voucher which refused to scan, cue a long phone call 'upstairs' which no-one apparently answered. It took about twenty minutes to buy a few items, and in that time several people abandoned their purchases or took one look in the door at the queue and walked off.

The sheer complacency of this understaffed and inefficiently run mega-shop is mind-boggling - I can't see how they manage to stay in business with this attitude. It's the same in their branches at stations and airports, where there are never enough staff on to deal with the long lines of people.

At least they seem to have removed those people in the front area who aggressively tried to sell electricity deals to anyone passing through. I used to avoid the shop completely because of them.
I agree, it's a badly organised place.

My mum once pointed out a display area which was advertising practice and practise papers.

Having said that I would miss it if it did ever close down (a la Woolies).
And didn't M& S use the whole upper floor of their premises? Sell furniture etc?
Like Woolies before its demise, WHSmith have been in financial difficulty for some time. They think concentrating on high footfall areas such as train stations & airports is the way forward for their business. They should decide therefore what to do regards their bigger stores because their staff & customers aren't a happy bunch at Wood Green.

Once again though online companies such as Amazon are devastating some High St stores. We the customers are voting with our computers.
Does make you wonder how they Survive

Must admit have not been in their for a While

And Only live a few minutes away

Mainly through Higher prices than other Local Shops

And do not buy papers or magazines - brother buy's morning paper
Yes, they had Green and Blacks chocolate bars near the till at £2.47!! That's way more than anywhere else. My local Turkish grocer on Green Lanes (used to be Shamus Abbas but something else now) sells them for £1.49 which is even lower than Tescos et al.

I would not buy a paper at WHS if I had to queue for ages to get it.

They aren't the only shop with big queues, though but Wilkinson always seem to have loads of tills open. Most clothes shops these days it seems that they want you to buy the clothes, they just don't seem to want to sell them to you!
You are right. I cant imagine they make too much profit from this store - as the rent for such a large business must be ridiculous. I remember doing my work experience at this WHS - the depot area downstairs is huge.

But like it or not - it is the main bookshop in Wood Green now. A colleague who once visited Wood Green - wondered why such a large shopping area didnt have a proper bookshop. Valid point.
What about the Big Green Bookshop? http://www.biggreenbookshop.com/ Only around the corner. Anyway, the books they sell in WH Smith are pretty dire - mostly Jeremy Clarkson/Jordan autobiography nonsense.

The only time I ever seem to find myself in WHS is at Christmas, in desperate search for wrapping paper.
