Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was mildly amused to discover a Labour leaflet on my doorstep proclaming the success of installing the camera on Wightman Road to catch HGV drivers flouting the ban.

I think we know on HoL where the credit truly lies. Well done Karen, and thank you for your perseverance on this matter.

Thanks John, I have flagged it up.

John, are you certain?

How do they do this? Turning serial failure into an artform.

Like the classic mini-roundabout with the arrows the wrong way round. Or a few streets from me, where a "LOOK LEFT" sign painted on the roadway took many months to be corrected even after a resident reported it.

No, it wasn't a one-way street. Though I'm taking occasional photos of a "Road Narrows" sign currently pointing the wrong way down a one-way street.  Just out of curiosity to see how long before one of our "professional" highways staff spots it.

To be fair, it's not as incompetent as it used to be.  Some years ago I complained to a former Chief Executive that almost every street in Tottenham Hale Controlled Parking Zone had errors in the painted lines.  In several streets every single line was wrong.

That particular Chief Executive had a change programme called "Achieving Excellence".

Hi Karen is there an update on this please?

I don't know about the camera on Wightman Road. I do know from my personal contact with her that Cllr Karen Alexander is someone who understands the value of teamwork and is ready to credit everyone who helps make something positive happen.

But can I raise a serious general point. Which is that none of the main political parties seem to fully grasp, let alone seriously consider, how lies, half-truths and propaganda further destroy trust between government and governed. At the same time poisoning the well of democratic decision-making.

Or, to be more charitable, having joined one of these peculiar little local religious sects, perhaps it's simply the case that members feel they have to present themselves as believers. Especially at election times when the faithful parade around the streets displaying relics handed down from the Party mothers and fathers; the holy clipboard of voter ID; the rosettes of the true political creed. And distributing the word in leaflets.

The sound of one-Party clapping itself.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

DID you ever hold office in one of these peculiar little local religious sects, Alan?

Or a general member – no matter how short a period ?

Sorry, Clive. I don't get the point of your question.

My membership of the Labour Party has never been secret. Nor the various posts I've held in Tottenham ward branches and Tottenham Constituency party.

I was also a member of the Labour Party in the 1970s when I lived in Islington. (Before then I tried to join when I lived for a while in South London, but the local Party never got back to me and didn't cash my cheques. But that was before Membership was run centrally.)

I'm still a Party member. Though thanks to the kindness and generosity of my Haringey Labour Group colleagues, my chains were unlocked.  I was helped up the steps out of the ignorance, darkness and illusions of the Koberpit.  And out into the fresh air and sunlight.

Alan I respect and understand your promotion (14 months ago) above the Majority Group.

My point however, is that for at least a period, you have been a member of what presumably you are now pleased to include as a one of the peculiar little local religious sects.

The UK Labour Party is an institution and has been around almost as long as the New Zealand Labour Party, even if its local Haringey branch has become partly dysfunctional.

In respect of our Borough it blames everyone else for problems, even though its been in power locally for 40 years.

Just wondering, has anyone noticed a reduction in HGV flouting the ban since this camera was installed?
