Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

Let me introduce myself first... My name is Virginie - I've lived on the Harringay ladder for four years and I've become very attached to the area since then. This is the reason why I've decided to start a website project on Harringay as part of the MA I am currently doing at Birkbeck University.

The idea of the project can be summed up as follows:

"A website which introduces the best restaurants, cafes and pubs located in the Harringay ladder; emphasizing on the multiculturalism of the area by promoting these businesses but also the people who own it and work in it."

Objectives:

Specific - To introduce and promote the best local restaurants, pubs and cafes of the Harringay Ladder to its inhabitants and its neighbourhood inhabitants - with the collaboration of the restaurant, pub and cafe owners, local councils,  Harringay community Associations and other potential partners.

The project aims at:

1- Maintaining/stimulating the local businesses activity.

2- Connecting the Harringay residential population (which is 2/3 European) with the Green Lanes multiculturalism.

3- Enabling the local restaurant owners to attract the new growing population of Harringay (Young professionals, students) by improving their visibility on the web.

Measurable - To create a website with a strong and modern design that presents the restaurants/cafes from a cultural angle, using a common content structure for each of them; to drive traffic to the website by giving helpful and up-to-date information on the restaurant/cafes/pubs to the public and enabling them to give their review; to improve the website visibility through Facebook, Twitter, Google +.

My plan for this academic year is to submit a proposal/business plan for the website (Final Presentation is in early July). This involves defining timescales, costs, expertise, hosting, maintenance... there is a lot to go through!

It is currently an academic project and it might or might not lead to the creation of a website as this will depend on financial contributions and/or sponsorships from restaurant owners, partners, local councils and advertising: to sum up there must be a demand for this project and it also has to be sustained. However it would be amazing if it all works out and becomes a successful website that people use.

For now I need to get in touch with people who can help me move forward in this project: restaurant owners, members of the Harringay community/associations, volunteers, etc... I am also looking at getting everyone's opinion and suggestions on this project so please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas/recommendations to make! Or if you just want to tell me what you think about this project.

If you feel like you can contribute to the project somehow, I am more than happy to meet up to discuss it further - collaboration is the key word for this community project!

Thank you for reading this (sorry it was a bit of a long message!) and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,

Virginie

What problem does this solve that couldn't be solved by using HoL?

Your heading says "...promote local businesses based in Harringay..." but your pitch summary says "...promote the best local restaurants, pubs and cafes of the Harringay Ladder..."

They're potentially two very different things.

Good luck with it.

I think this is a good idea.  Will it just be restaurants etc or local business in general? Not sure if i can help but am interested in watching to see how it develops. if you need feedback etc , am happy to help

good luck

Hi Matthew - thank you for your message. the idea would be to start with the restaurants & bars - and potentially expand to other businesses as well.

I think that the highlight of Harringay Green Lanes is definitely the various restaurants and that - to me - has got the potential for more visibility on the web. I am considering different options to drive traffic to the website - perhaps including bar/pub events but there is only a few of them in the area - the project still needs nurturing!

I'm definitely open to any suggestion and can email you more about this if you would like to give me your opinion/feedback.

Hi Virginie,

Have you contacted Moka on Wightman Road. I'm sure they would be interested?  They are members of this site.

I was actually planning to go and see them sometime this weekend! La Vina is on my list as well as I have only visited the restaurants on Harringay Green Lanes so far.

Thank you for the tip.

to improve the website visibility through Facebook, Twitter, Google +.

Virginie, I think you'll find that that "2/3 European" Harringay residential population is very multicultural too.

And, like Andy (above), I wonder why you don't cite HOL as a source of 'improved visibility'.  Too old?  Wrong "demographic"?  Why disturb our slumber in the first place?

Hi OAE

Yes I am aware that 2/3 Harringay residential population is very multicultural too - what I was trying to describe here (and obviously failed!) is in fact a different "multiculturalism". This is what I've felt over the year living on the ladder - I might have got it wrong and I shall make further research to back up my assumptions.

In regards to HOL - I am not intending to disturb anyone and my project does certainly not serve the same purpose. I believe there is space on the web for a different project on Harringay. Again I might be wrong - finding out about the project sustainability and viability is part of my initial objectives...
