One thing I have learned since moving back into this area last December is that as soon as summer starts, so too do the 'water melon wars'.
There is not a shop on Green Lanes without them. And the water melon season moves on, the prices fall. ABout a month ago, the price was around 79p a kilo. As of this morning, that greengrocer in St Anne's Road has them for 30p a kilo, making them the current leader in the battle for the water melon pound.
Mind you, just before going there, I popped into that haven of good food value, Sainsburys. They too have a plentiful stock of neatly cut and packaged slices of water melon.
You won't get a lot of melon for your money, but you will pay a lot of money for your melon, because good old Sainsbury is knocking the stuff out at (wait for it) FOUR POUNDS SEVENTY FOUR PENCE a kilo.
I wonder whose buying it at that price?
