Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I live in Hornsey Park Road, and some time between 8pm last night and lunchtime today, some thieving scumbag (I'm waiting to be told that they were misunderstood poor people who cannot afford their own herbs!) has stolen 2 herb plants from my front garden - one v large rosemary plant (that I've been growing for over a year) and one large apple-mint plant (that I've been growing from the 2 small stems I bought at Harringay Market at the beginning of the summer).  Both well-loved and used several times a week in my kitchen. Both were in fairly large pots, so not easy or light to carry, and they left behind some smaller, more straggly plants, which makes me believe it was not kids 'messing about' but someone who intended to sell the plants on.

I know in the grand scheme of things they are only a couple of plants, but this has made me very upset and angry, and ruined my day to be honest.  I thought they were fairly safe in my front garden as I have grown herbs out there for years, and because they were big eniough to be quite awkward to take for an opportunist thief.

Just wanted to warn anyone who, like me, enjoys brightening their road with potted plants in their from garden - these thieves will take anything they can!

I had my window boxes stolen from my old flat (not in Harringay) They were metal and thought maybe it was the metal that they wanted not the plants... Who knows?! It's horrible have things stolen even if it is plants. Maybe someone will commit a random act of kindness to restore your faith in the human race...

What gits!!  This my first year in the ladder & i have already filled my front with  pots.

I plan to up-grade next year.  I'll keep an eye out & perhaps add some razor blades under the pot rims ;o)

Thanks guys.  Looking after those plants and seeing them grow was a kind of therapy for me, I'm normally useless at growing things, and I was so proud of them, they made me smile each time I passed them on my way in/out of the house.

We dont have much of a back garden, but have a flat roof at the back that I can put replacement plants on, but it wont be the same as having lovely looking and smelling herbs out the front for all to see/smell!

I onced cemented pots to a post out the front of a camden flat.  Dont let them put you off, otherwise they would have won.

Perhaps use a big half barrel?  or butlers sink?  or something else as big or heavy / awkward to run off with.

Hmmm that's an idea, will think about that. But then again, I've heard of people digging up the plant to steal it too.  That's happened lots of times in our neck of the woods where our residents' association has planted plants in public places to brighten up the area around the back of Wood Green Shopping City - people have just helped themselves to the plants from the big planters!

A family member said to me that we should feel sorry for the type of person who does not have the same morals as us and would do something like this, but I'm all out of sympathy at the moment!

Suggest to your family member that it's YOU they should feel sorry for and that they might offer to replace your plants.

LOL, that's an idea. :-)

I had two little cyclamen plants dug up and taken from a street planter yesterday. Don't think it was kids as they look carefully dug out

That's such a mean thing to do. And proves my point that it doesn't matter how secure your containers are, as if necessary they will just dig up the plant.

My partner reckons that it might be criminal 'business', driving around in a van, picking up decent plants that can be sold on.

and now today one of the yellow pansies ...

Oh how mean and nasty! I'd love to catch someone at it, I'd let them know what I thought of them!

Scumbags or drunken students? Don’t worry I am sure they will grow up to be good liberals like yourself.

Look on the bright side. At least your rubbish is safe!
